5 Reasons to Get Outdoors – We Talk Nature and Health

As our society becomes more and more technology dependent, we reduce the amount of time that we spend outdoors. 20 years ago, kids used to run around and enjoy the swing! Today, they have tablets and baby laptops. Kids don’t really want to go out anymore, and the same applies to their parents.
Are you wondering whether it’s time to try and spend a bit more time outside your home? There are a number of reasons that you should start enjoying outdoor activities right now. Here are five of the most important ones:

5 reasons to get outdoors – Relaxation

Just imagine the following two scenarios: sitting at home and staring at the TV screen or going outside to observe the greenery and listen to the songs of birds. Which scenario sounds more relaxing?

Several studies suggest that the natural environment combats stress and anxiety much more effectively than the urban environment. Beautiful scenery and green landscapes have a positive impact on our thought patterns. They help us “recharge our batteries” and focus.
Going outside also provides a mental break. It’s possible to simply walk or sit and forget about your everyday worries. People who have stressful jobs are going to benefit from this aspect of spending time outdoors the most.

5 reasons to get outdoors – Movement

Going outside stimulates us to move. Whether you’re jumping on trampolines with your kids, walking or biking, you’ll be much more active than during the time you spend inside your home or the office.

Spending time outdoors is perfect for those of us who want to be fit, the ones who want to lose a bit of weight and everyone who would like to get moving! The outdoor environment is encourages thoughtless motion. Activities outside are fun, and you’re not going to feel the pressure that you experience in the gym or during a home workout.

Doing something as simple as playing with your kids while they bounce on their Vuly Trampoline, at the swing sets or on their skateboards will be sufficient to boost your metabolism and move you closer towards a healthier weight.

5 reasons to get outdoors – Vitamin D

Do you know what’s one of the best ways to ensure optimum vitamin D levels? Spending enough time in the sun is everything that your body needs when it comes to naturally producing of this essential vitamin.

According to a study presented in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2009, three quarters of adults and teens in the US are vitamin D deficient. The study suggests that in the period between 1988 and 1994, 45 per cent of the population had sufficiently high vitamin D levels. Today, the number has gone down to 23 per cent.
The amount of time that we spend indoor is one of the main reasons why vitamin D levels are plummeting, and it’s an essential for overall health. Vitamin D deficiency is a factor in a range of medical problems—from heart disease to certain types of cancer.

More Energy

In a 2010 study, researchers found out that people who spend time walking outdoors felt more energetic than those who remain in their homes.
Connecting with nature is one of the best ways to get energised. After all, who doesn’t feel energised after a quick jog around the park? Spending time in the open air helps combat feelings of exhaustion, which is essential if you have a hectic schedule.

Better Eyesight

How much time do you spend in front of the TV or the computer screen? You already know that staring at the screen is far from the best thing for your eyes. The situation gets even more troublesome when kids are involved.

One study, authored by Edith Cowan University professor Wei Wang, suggests that the levels of myopia among children aged 11 and 12 in Beijing has grown by nearly 80 percent. The researcher suggests that the strict emphasis on academic culture in China and the lower levels of natural light make kids spend more time inside, which contributes to eye problems.

An Australian study suggests that children who spend more time outside are less likely to suffer from eye problems!

These are just some of the reasons why spending more time outside makes a lot of sense. Being outdoors with your family is also a lot of fun! Add the health benefits to the mix and you’ll get a truly rewarding experience.
